Robin McCoy: ARTIST BIO

Robin McCoy is an expressionist painter living and working in Asheville, NC. A native of Charleston, SC, he discovered oil painting while studying commercial graphic arts at Savannah College of Art & Design. Obsessed with postwar abstract expressionists and figurative painters, he turned his attention from a rigid commercial approach to focus on large scale paintings in an attempt to move past those formal, learned processes. The result is a very personal process that allows the improvised paint application to inform the final image.

All of the pieces displayed here were submerged by the floodwaters of Hurricane Helen during September of 2024. They all now display damage to varying degrees, demonstrating their resilience by surviving against horrible odds. The survivors were recovered and carry that history as part of their story.
